Security Awareness Training Cost: Pricing Models Explained
Try Skillermatic free Start a free trial and look at the lessons, the admin portal and phishing simulation yourself. Start a free trial → Security awareness training cost depends on three things: how many people you have, which plan you pick and which extras you add. Almost every vendor charges per user, per month.
Pricing pages for training tools can feel like a puzzle. Here is how to read them.
We will not list prices in this article, because prices change and a stale number helps nobody. For live numbers, see our pricing page, which pulls from the same price book as checkout.
How is security awareness training priced?
Most platforms use one or more of five models. Knowing which one you are looking at tells you what to watch for.
| Model | How it works | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Per user per month | You pay for each person, each month | Minimum number of users |
| Team size bands | The per-user price drops as the team grows | Where the bands start and end |
| Plan levels | Basic to Enterprise, with more features higher up | Which features you really need |
| Add-ons | Extras such as bigger simulation packs or custom courses | They can double the cost |
| Done-for-you service | Someone runs the rollout for you | Scope and timeline |
What should you compare in a security awareness training quote?
Compare the total monthly cost for your real team size, not the “from” price on the front page. A “from” price often assumes a big team or a long contract.
- Per-user price for your real team size.
- What is included: how many courses, and is phishing simulation in the plan?
- Extras: custom courses, AI-generated simulations, compliance reporting.
- Minimums: do you pay for 50 users when you have 12?
- Currency: will your price change with the exchange rate?
- Contract: monthly or yearly, and what happens if you cancel.
A worked example: comparing two quotes
Imagine two quotes for a 30-person team. Vendor A shows a low per-user price, but phishing simulation is an add-on and there is a 50-user minimum. Vendor B shows a higher per-user price, with simulation included and no minimum.
Do the sum with your own numbers: per-user price times the users you really pay for, plus add-ons, every month. Vendor B may be cheaper in the end. Only the total tells you.
How does Skillermatic price its training?
From our pricing page:
- Priced per person, per month.
- Plans: Basic, Intermediate, Advanced and Enterprise.
- Add-ons: extra course packs, bigger phishing simulation packs, AI-generated simulations tailored to your systems, a compliance pack, a fully custom course build, or a managed service.
- Nigerian customers pay fixed Naira prices; others are quoted in USD, EUR or CAD.
- Yearly billing is cheaper than monthly. See the page for the current figure.
What questions should you ask about price before you buy?
Ask each vendor, in writing:
- What is the total per month for [your team size] users?
- What is in the price, and what costs extra?
- Is there a minimum, a setup fee or a lock-in?
- What currency, and is it fixed?
- Can I try it first?
What is not worth paying for?
- A huge content library nobody will open.
- Tools that report only completion.
- Features you cannot name a use for.
What is worth paying for?
The rules that ask for training also ask for regularity. The FTC Safeguards Rule guide says to provide security awareness training and schedule regular refreshers. So pay for what makes regular training easy:
- Short lessons people finish.
- A safe phishing simulation with a clear report.
- Records you can show on request.
- The ability to add your own courses.
Is free security awareness training enough?
Free material can be a good start for one lesson or one poster. It rarely gives you tracking, reminders, reports and a record you can show later. If you only need a baseline, try a free phishing risk test first. When you need records for an auditor or insurer, a paid platform saves you the admin time.
See how to choose a security awareness training platform for the full list of checks, and how to track employee training completion for what records to keep.
What does a simple price comparison sheet look like?
Copy this into a spreadsheet and fill one column per vendor. It takes ten minutes and saves months of regret.
| Line | Vendor A | Vendor B |
|---|---|---|
| Price per user per month | ||
| Number of users you really pay for | ||
| Phishing simulation included? | ||
| Add-ons you need | ||
| Setup fee or minimum | ||
| Currency and is it fixed? | ||
| Monthly or yearly contract | ||
| Total per month |
Fill the last row with real arithmetic. If a vendor will not give you the numbers in writing, treat that as your answer.
You can also ask a simple question at the end of each call: “If we only have 12 people, what do we pay?” Small teams are often where hidden minimums show up.
